How to buy the Rolex that's right for you

Rolex is clearly the best known and most popular fine, luxury watch brand in the world. Rolex has long been known as a maker of high-end watches. It was in the 1980's, thanks to movies like Wall Street that their reputation went from stellar to astronomical because they were called the luxury wristwatch for young rich people and stockbrokers.

Both the people who embraced and those who decried the yuppie image were very effective in making the name of Rolex a household word. Thanks to the 80's boom, Rolex prices got higher. A stainless steel DateJust model that sold for $900 in 1981 rose to US $2350 by 1991, even though they changed it. Models in finer metals were even more expensive. In fact, many began to say (tongue in cheek) that Rolexes were made of a precious metal called "unobtanium."

Despite all the hype and the ramblings of all those jealous Rolex wanna-buys, the Swiss watch company continues to produce extremely high quality, beautiful watches.

There are several points of contention about Rolexes that I should mention which are:

  • Rolex are individually handmade watches--Most of them are actually mass-produced by machines. Generally only special editions that are handcrafted.
  • Rolex are the most accurate watches in the world-A real, authentic Rolex will be extremely accurate
  • A Rolex watch takes a year to make- This statement has never been proven but I wouldn't be surprised if it were true.
  • Rolex watches have a high resale value--While this is possible, it is unlikely unless it is a limited edition.

What this says is that Rolex is a great watch to be sure, but which is the best for you? That depends entirely on what you want your watch to do. How much money do you want to spend on a watch? The fact is that Rolex is one of the most recognizable watches. It's a universal symbol of luxury and extravagance. The particular model you choose should depend on your personal tastes.
