Let’s face it. You can get by with a $20 quartz watch from Wal-Mart. It’ll keep great time, probably look decent and it’s no sweat if you happen to bash it against a bar room floor.
But at Great Guy Life we’re about more than just getting by. You’re moving ahead with your life and you want people to know it. And one of the best ways to show off how great things are going is with a luxury timepiece.
Once you’ve decided to make a purchase the big question becomes – what brand and how much should you spend?
There’s no doubt that the undisputed heavyweight champ of luxury watches is Rolex. Rolex has spent a long time developing its brand to represent the finest watch money can buy. And if you’re thinking about purchasing a genuine Rolex, you’d better be ready to fork over a major chunk of change.
Rolex watches can retail anywhere from $5,000 to well over $10,000. This is not only because of the precious metals and intricate movements used in the watches, but also because, in order to maintain its luxury status, Rolex makes sure that the supply of their watches never equals demand. In fact, most authorized Rolex dealers only get one or two of any particular model, and once they’re sold out, you can expect to wait a long time before another watch arrives.
You Don’t Need to Spend $10,000 on a Rolex
So maybe you’ve decided that you want a genuine Rolex, but would rather spend some of that cash on a new car. Or you like the style of a particular Rolex model, but don’t want to run the risk of losing or damaging such a high-priced item. What’s the alternative?
Well, like we said, you could go to one of the Big Box Stores and pick out something from the case, but that wouldn’t do much good when you’re showing off at parties.
Here at great guys we recommend you never buy a replica watch we think you should at least be aware of the difference between the cheap knock-offs you see being sold by unscrupulous street vendors and the high-quality watches that resemble their expensive counterparts so closely, that only trained jewelers and experts can tell the difference.
So, what do you look for? There are many dealers on the Internet who specialize in replica watches and if Rolex isn’t your brand of choice, you can find other replicas like Omega, Breitling or Patek. One thing you want to keep in mind is that the Swiss replicas are among the best. This is because the Swiss replica watches usually use higher-grade metals, crystals and components than the cheap Asian fakes that many people think of when the term replica is used. And as stated, the Swiss replicas are so close to the real thing, that 99% of the people you run into won’t know that you’re not wearing a real Rolex.
And another thing to consider is that, while you won’t be spending thousands on an authentic Rolex, these Swiss replicas can run up to $1,000 or more, and that’s still a good bit of cash to be spending on a watch. You might as well look for a used rolex!
So What’s the Bad News?
Well, the replica watch industry DOES operate in a legal grey area. While these watches won’t prompt a visit from Homeland Security agents, you won’t likely be able to take the watch to a jeweler for repairs because it could get confiscated. In addition, while most replica watch dealers are honest businesspeople, you will run into unscrupulous scam artists who just want your money. And because you’re buying a technically illegal product, you won’t get much help if you get screwed.
The bottom line is: if you want to play it safe, you really should either purchase the real thing, or opt for a good looking, but cheaper brand of watch. Or even better, if the people you hang out with are only impressed by expensive “toys” you might just want to get some new friends.
